"We play Top 40 music that's forty years
old," says Texas native Don Walser. As a teenager, Walser shared bills
with fellow West Texan Buddy Holly. Working days for the National Guard, he
played music by night, anywhere he could, as his job took him throughout Texas.
Settling in El Paso, Walser became a roving ambassador for Texas tourism. In
1984, he moved to Austin, where he put together the Pure Texas Band, which
came to include fiddler Howard Kalish and steel guitarist Jimmy Day. As much
as he can make classic country have a contemporary feel, Walser remains an
ardent music preservationist. "You let the roots die," he says, "and
you lose the whole darn tree." For more information, contact Watermelon
