Restuarant Guide

Welcome to what could be a wide ranging but hopefully not too self-indulgent look at the many aspects of the world of food. I am heavily involved with food, but I am by no means a professional or expert. Hopefully we can use this opportunity to bring the world of food down to earth and share our good fortunes as well as some misfortunes, whether it be a great dinner or finding good tomatoes.

Feedback is expected! Let me know you're out there. Share some of your food experiences from restaurants to cookbooks, recipes to farmers' markets, soup to nuts, good and bad. Let's bring this place to life! Reach me for now at wvmc3d@earthlink.net.

In the short existence of VVV, a new restaurant I loved (Mambo Cafe) has already closed before I could even post its review. It was killed by a number of lukewarm and negative reviews partly based on some provincial snobbery about people from Los Angeles trying to invade the Northern California food community.

This has made me question the validity of any of the items I see in the SF Weekly, the Bay Guardian, or either of the two San Francisco dailies. I wrote my Mambo Cafe piece and within a week it was put down twice. I should be thankful because self-doubt made me immediately go back to confirm my favorable first impressions. Unfortunately the people that need to be told what they like stayed away. It has shown me that you have to get out there and check places out yourself. Some of the worst experiences I have ever had were in places that had received great reviews. You may just avoid some of the sheep that flock to the latest anointed spots. Another favorite (Tisane) has recently closed probably because the money people/landlord fell out with the food people. And the list will go on, so we will acknowledge these passings and save our precious memories of the beloved departed when necessary. Just look for those tombstones and never forget.
