Roger Manning

With just one loud guitar and an urban bluegrass voice, Roger Manning is a one-man band who mixes a surprising hybrid of styles. He can powerstrum with the messy fury of punk and grundge, or pick away with a nimble country twang. But his lyrics, which he says "are either about sex or politics," sound like folk songs, full of sharp images, insight and compassion. Manning won a rave in People Magazine for his self-titled 1988 debut album on SST (which includes the jewel-like ballad "The Pearly Blues") and his second CD, also titled Roger Manning, was released by Shimmy Disc in 1993. A string of self-released tapes from Manning's own Broome Closet studio in Manhattan will be followed by another rough-edged gem this fall. He's also booking a late '95 U.S. tour. Don't expect big label slickness--just integrity and passion.
